Asiatic Black Bear (Actually Outside!)

This very very old Asiatic Black Bear is very antisocial, and very rarely comes outside. Thus, it is almost never seen. It was exciting to see it not only outside, but up and moving! She will be turing 34 years old in December 2015.

Pretty lucky to see her out and about! I agree - anytime she (named Hot Lips) is out is a treat considering her species is being phased out. I feel so sorry for her whenever she is up and moving - she always looks to be in so much pain. :(

I wonder what'll happen to the exhibit once she passes on as I doubt the Zoo would put another bear in that exhibit. Personally, I'd like to see it get redesigned with a larger pool for either fishing cats or small-clawed otters.

I have to say I agree with you there, she does look like she's in pain. :(
Yes, i always thought if they raise the wall on the other side a little bit and fill in the moat with some natural substrate and extend the pool to the window (and hopefully build a shade structure over it, the glare on that window is terrible!) that it would make a pretty neat small clawed otter exhibit. I never thought about a fishing cat, that would be really cool too! I imagine they'd have to build a mesh covering for fishing cats. I bet they'll go with fishing cats, because back when the current Caracal exhibit was still empty, they were talking about bringing in fishing cats to put in there, but they went with an African species instead, thus caracal. :)

Really? What else did they talk about putting in the exhibit? I would imagine the now off-display tayras?

For a while, the tayras did have access to the exhibit, but only at night after the building closed. I really don't understand why they didn't just give it to the tayras, but I guess they wanted to stick with a cat species. They were talking about only little cats, but a caracal or fishing cat were the top 2. There was talk about a bobcat or lynx, but at that time, the cheetah had only recently passed away. When I asked a zookeeper about it a few months later (so about May 2014) they only mentioned a caracal or fishing cat. "We'd have to renovate the exhibit and add a water feature for a fishing cat, but they would be really cool to have." said the zookeeper.

Cool. Actually, I talked to a keeper one day regarding the tayras. At one point, I suggested the possibility exhibiting them in the indoor jaguar area permanently, with jaguars being seen only outdoors (similar to the caracal/cheetahs). She actually agreed, but unfortunately told me that they were ordered to keep the exhibits strictly felines.
