Laysan albatross

The MBA has a Laysan albatross female, supposedly the only one in captivity. She has a permanent wing malfunction and cannot be released in the wild. She was 8 years old when this photo was taken in June 2014. Albatrosses can live to be 50+ years old, so she may be at the MBA for a long time.

She comes out on her cart once a day for a demonstration and conservation talk about her very cool species.

Shame they do not bring her out into a more well-lit area, really.
 
I've seen her twice, both times outdoors on the deck overlooking "The Great Tidepool" and the Bay beyond. Stunning bird.....

Good to hear; don't suppose you have any photographs you could post on here? I suspect this is a species unlikely to pop up anywhere else, so it would certainly be a nice addition to the gallery.
 
I haven't seen a Laysan albatross in real life, but it looks quite small compared to other species.
