Montgomery Zoo is famous for having massive, mixed-species paddocks that are enormous in size and lush year-round. The Asian, African and North American continental zones have huge exhibits that can all be seen at the exact same time from the central Overlook Restaurant.
Africa: One side has Reticulated Giraffes and Abyssinian Ground Hornbills, while the other, much more spacious area has these species: Bontebok, Grant’s Zebra, Marabou Stork, White-Headed Vulture, Slender-Horned Gazelle, Dama Gazelle, African Crowned Crane and Greater Kudu. One really neat aspect of the two yards is that the African Black-Footed Penguins and Pygmy Hippos seem to have access to the entire area, although they often stick to their dividing moats.
North America: A fantastic, huge mixed-species yard has these species: American Bison, Bighorn Sheep, Wild Turkey, Roosevelt Elk and White-Tailed Deer.
The last few times I've been, the penguins have been gone, so I asked a keeper and she said that the penguins were sent to another facility until they could make better accommodations and a more permanent exhibit for them, separate from the hoofstock.
