did the sign actually say that Pteranodon was the largest flying animal ever? Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx (both of the family Azhadrichidae), were considerably bigger and vie for title of largest flying animal. There's a cool article here about giant pterosaurs: Ancient Giraffe-Sized Creature Pole-Vaulted into the Sky | LiveScience
(If the museum signage dates from before the 1980s then it's not wrong as such, just outdated )

Actually the dinosaur (and other ancient reptile like pterosaurs) hall just opened in July 2011. I may have extrapolated from some of the signage that this was the largest flying creature so the error may well be mine. Thanks for the information and the article link.
I've done some digging and I think that this is actually a Quetzalcoatlus skull. I will verify next time I am at the museum (or is someone who is reading this knows for sure please chime in).
