The local Forest Preserve committee voted 21-0 to send two elderly female Asian elephants away due to quality of life concerns. The two elephants were transferred to the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas in October 2013.
Also, Niabi Zoo lost its AZA-accreditation in the process and is now working hard at improving other sections of the zoo in a hope to regain accreditation.
The elephants were sent away in 2013...bactrian camels have been there for years...and now the zoo is fundraising to obtain white rhinos for this exhibit.
