Watani Grasslands- African Elephant exhibit: middle and right of 1st habitat

The elephant exhibit comprises of 2 habitats separated by a moat. I believe each exhibit is 3.5 acres in size (1 being the old elephant habitat and the other being the old rhino habitat)

The only thing this marvellous pair of enclosures is missing is a larger group of elephants. The San Diego Wild Animal Park has an impressive number of youngsters in their paddocks.

I believe they plan on adding more. Its amazing that only 2 elephants share 3.5 acres while the other 3 share 3.5 acres. That is between 1.2-1.7 acres per elephant!

This looks like a fantastic enclosure!

The have 7 African Elephants - Artie and C'sar and 5 females, Tonga and her calf Batir in the pic above, Nikki, Little Diamond and Rafiki. Nikke was just recently successfully integrated with Rafiki and Little Diamond. Tonga and Batir are still kept in separate enclosures because the Matriarch won't accept them yet. We visited this zoo last week. On the first day, Tonga and Batir were in one enclosure and C'sar was in the other. We asked when the other elephants would be out and were told they rotate them on a daily basis. We came back the following day and Rafiki, Little Diamond and Nikki were in the yard occupied by Tonga and Batir the day before and Tonga and Batir were the yard occupied by C'sar the day before. We didn't stay an extra day, so we didn't get to see Artie.

The exhibit gives the elephants so much space. Did Tonga and Batir come from the Riddle's Elephant and Wildlife Sanctuary?

Yes. Tonga, Batir and Artie came from Riddles Elephant Breeding Farm. It is not a sanctuary.
