I have never seen that feature before - interesting.
In case any non-Americans do not know why this is here, it represents the geysers found in Yellowstone National Park, which is a stronghold for the American bison that is in the exhibit behind the geyser.
There's a very similar installation in the Yukon Bay exhibit at Hannover Zoo - not operational on the day I was there due to most of the zoo being frozen!

Yeah, the NC Zoo Geyser only goes off on warmer days, but given NC's climate, that's most of the year. This was taken just last September.
It's not visible in this picture, but it was taken from a wooden boardwalk that curves around the geyser, like the ones you see built near real geysers.
This is a more recent feature. I think they installed it at most 3 years ago.
