Green Monkey Exhibit

July 17th, 2011.
@snowleopard and whoever else wants to chime in:
This is the best vervet exhibit that I've seen (other than actual vervet habitat). Where is your favorite vervet exhibit?

Where is (are) your overall favorite monkey exhibit(s)? I personally like the San Diego Zoo Allen's swamp monkey exhibit and Monkey Village at the Phoenix Zoo.

This is an excellent vervet monkey exhibit and that species is almost unheard of in North American zoos so Oakland probably has the best habitat around! That really is too bad as they are an interesting and active species, and just like blue monkeys they are barely around these days.

Anyway, great monkey exhibits...hmmm...here are 10 for you:

- San Diego Zoo's entire Monkey Trails & Forest Tales area is excellent, and I enjoy seeing the Wolf's guenons in with the pygmy hippos
- Phoenix Zoo has the outstanding Monkey Village (walk-through with squirrel monkeys)
- Woodland Park Zoo has a lush, green, terrific colobus monkey/red-flanked duiker exhibit
- Kansas City Zoo and North Carolina Zoo both have multi-acre Hamadryas baboon exhibits that feature large troops and are truly excellent
- Bronx Zoo's gelada/ibex multi-acre habitat is outstanding
- Zoo Atlanta's Monkeys of Makokou is excellent
- Central Park Zoo's Japanese macaque enclosure is pretty cool
- Los Angeles Zoo's Francois langur exhibit seems to be great (I saw the completed exhibit in 2008, although it was awaiting golden monkeys at the time)
- Denver Zoo (included here for sheer quantity) has 7 acres devoted to 30 species of primates although it features a hodge-podge of exhibit design

My favorite vervet monkey exhibit (not that there are very many to choose from) is at Werribee Open Range zoo. It is modeled after Woodland Park Zoo's patas monkey exhibit, with a hidden rear moat opening onto a savanna hoofstock range. Werribee also features a glass viewing area, and is very nicely planted as a scrubby savanna edge. I understand, however that the central savanna has been re-purposed as a gorilla island, so all of the positives I list above may have been negated.

Overall, I am partial to the Bronx Zoo's gelada and mandrill/DeBrazza monkey exhibits. Monkey Village is quite fun too; just not very pretty. Adelaide's leaf monkey/tapir exhibit, built around a huge fig tree, is also wonderful.

Cincinnati's Jungle Trails is loaded with primates and in my opinion there all great exhibits from Bonobos, orangutans and Gibbons to Lemurs (Aye-aye,Coquerel's sifaka,B/W Ruffed Lemur,Grey bamboo Lemur)Francois Langurs,Diana Monkey and Lion Tailed Macaque . Ringtail Lemur Gibbon/Siamangs & Gorillas have seperate exhibits that are beautiful. They only place in the u.s to see the Gray's crowned guenon. Colobos Monkeys. Night Hunters has Pottos,Pygmy slow lorises and Garnett's Galago (Greater Bushbaby). And oddly Emperor Tamarins in World of Insects:confused:

The patas monkey at Woodland Park is another nominee for a great monkey exhibit.
