I first visited the Oakland Zoo in 1992 and there were no hippos there at that time, nor any indication of a hippo exhibit so it must have been several years prior to then.
The old river otter exhibit in the old children's zoo (now completely rebuilt with a new otter exhibit) was formerly a bottle-nosed dolphin exhibit apparently. It was a horrible otter exhibit so it must have been pure hell for a dolphin. I would assume that the former hippo exhibit was likely horrible also based on the state of the old exhibits before the zoo underwent its renaissance starting in the late 1980s.
The last time i visited Oakland Zoo was in 2007, back when i was 15. I saw that north american river otter exhibit. Its very hard to imagine bottle nosed dolphins in that exhibit or any species of dolphin for that matter. I don't see how a dolphin could swim good distances or jump in that exhibit. I hate to judge exhibits but i have got to say that must be pure hell for those magnificent animals, and by the way what animals do you remember back in 1992 that are no longer at the zoo ???, and if you have pictures of those, i would love to see them on Zoochat. By the way, Oakland Zoo is a great zoo with very spacious naturalistic exhibits, I would love to see the zoo add more species to its collection, there are 600 acres of parkland surrounding the zoo and more animals would be a great addition to that space, especially ungulates, because of the vast space and because of course i am a hoof-stock fanatic. By the way, any information about the Oakland Zoo's history would be very useful !!!
