From my 2012 Annual report:

"Opening in late 2015 the California Trail project will transform 56 acres of the Oakland Zoo managed 490-acre Knowland Park into a dynamic living environment where visitors of of all ages can understand California as it was in the past; experience it is as it is now; and, imagine what it can be in the future. Through live and extirpated animal and plant exhibits, the Zoo will highlight the delicate balance between plants, animals, and humans -- and the impact of change on all three. The California Trail will underscore the significance of California as an international symbol of beauty and a land of great native splendor. Its abundant resources have shaped the people of California as much as they have shaped it. Good and bad; stewardship and destruction; the effect of man on this fragile environment will be exhibited in a way that motivates citizens to care about and for California."

Thanks for posting this photo, and if one zooms in then it is easy to see the size of the large exhibits planned for this complex. The "extension" zones are huge and the larger mammals will have plenty of room to roam without the prying eyes of visitors (if they are indeed off-exhibit areas). This development has been planned for many years and I'm excited to see it open in 2015.

Where will the Grizzly Bears come from? Do scientist still view Ursus arctos nelsoni as being a valid subspecies?

It is nice to see that the bears, cats and wolves get all that space. aren't there smaller animal exhibits planned as well? if this is pulled off, it will be absolutely amazing!

Ian, every year it seems Brown Bears are considered nuisance animals and get placed in captivity if deemed unfit to be relocated. Same goes for cubs that are orphaned due to mom being killed, hit by vehicle, etc.

There are North American river otters in the regular zoo already. There might be a bobcat off exhibit as well; otherwise, I think they've really hit California's non-marine wildlife. Deers, raccoons, and foxes are still pretty commonplace (even though I just recently saw my first red fox) throughout the state. I hear rumors of beavers as well, but I've yet to see one.

The only animal they're missing thus far -- that I want to see -- is the wolverine. ;) They're rarely seen, but sightings have occurred in the northern and eastern parts of the state.

I suspect that they'll be wild caught and/or rescues. Hopefully a pair of brothers for possible breeding with the sisters in San Francisco. It's wishful thinking at best, but I would like to see a klatch of grizzlies released back into California at some point in the future.

That will likely never happen. There are too many people in California and grizzlies need too much room. It is likely that wolves will repopulate the state though, so that's something.

According to previous maps, there is going to be beavers and a waterfowl aviary. I guess that’s what the wetlands walk is. There is something similar on the new map also.
