1. This looks like a completely new enclosure. Is it attached to the older indoor house which used to house Mkubwa the Eastern Lowland male? That was near the Lake and had one or two pit-like outdoor areas- has that all vanished now and a complete new facility been built?

2. I guess the old original ape cages with no outdoor areas are now long gone (I certainly hope so!! :( )

3. silverback is probably 'Tatu' born at Jersey in the UK.

I'm not sure if an older area was incorporated into the new ape zone, but "Great EscApe" opened in 1993, and I copied and pasted this info from the zoo's website:

Venture into the world of the great apes at Great EscApe, a world-class exhibit that allows adventurers to journey through a tropical rainforest and view gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees.

This $6.6 million dollar exhibit occupies a six-acre plot featuring three and one-half acres of naturalistic habitats for the primates and visitors to enjoy. The exhibit features 18 animals, including: two troops of gorillas, one family of orangutans, and a community of chimpanzees.

Great EscApe contains many features that make it a premier primate facility in the world. A combination of waterfalls, rocks, fallen trees, pools, and thousands of lush plantings immerse the visitor in a tropical forest.

Step into the world of exotic beauty and experience the habitat of the great apes - Great EscApe.

@Cat-Man: what are you talking about?:) The Oklahoma City Zoo is the subject of this thread, and so why do you mention the Oakland Zoo?

'Great escApe' is definately at Oklahoma- I think he thinks you have the wrong location but there is no 'great escape' mentioned for Oakland....

I am pretty sure this is a completely different development as it is very many years since I went there.
