I am not sure of the exact timeline for the proposed elehant exhibit at the Henry Doorly Zoo, as there are Madagascar and Arctic projects ahead of the pachyderms in the pecking order.
I would'nt say this exhibit is terrible, I mean look at some other zoos for example who have 10 0r 12 elephants in a paddock thats dusty and small. atleast these guys can graze. I think what this exhibit needs is a bit of sprucing up until they finsih the new exhibit. A pool, some shade structures and more enrichment could definitly help. Also, making the two exhibits into one and housing them together could also be of benefit?
I think that once the elephants are moved into their massive paddock (in a few years) then the white rhinos will gain the space that the elephants currently occupy. The rhino paddocks are already fairly large, but with the elehants eventually moving then there could be a huge amount of space for further expansion...and maybe even more rhinos.
