Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo - Orangutan Exhibit

July 2008.
The two tall trees don't look (aesthetically) quite right somehow, but otherwise this looks great. And distinctively designed - you'd recognise it from a picture. I like that.

It looks like (and I hate judging from just a pic) the orangs can climb upwards... and then back down. Doesn't appear to be any other climbing stuff other than the big tree? Correct me if I'm wrong.

@Ash: to some degree you are absolutely right, and thus that is a valid criticism of these exhibits. The height of the huge trees is very impressive, as it offers the apes a lookout onto part of the zoo. When I visited the orangs were using the mesh that encloses the enclosures as a place to climb (as one appears to be doing in this photo) and so that is an added bonus. The two main trees do have a number of large branches that sprout off into different directions, but I would love to have seen at least one or two more trees built so that there would be an entire maze of climbing opportunities.

As for the graffiti at the L.A. Zoo, it is becoming a nuisance, and I'm sure quite expensive. It seems they are making efforts to keep a better watch on things, I believe they installed security cameras in the new China Pavilion viewing area for the Francois' Langurs. But even those windows are starting to show some neglect in cleaning. But the graffiti has been a problem with all three great ape exhibits, the Sea Life Cliffs underwater viewing area, Desert Trails' Mexican Beaded Lizard enclosure, though there I've noticed an adjustment in lighting so the scratches aren't as noticeable. And don't even try to see the Ocelots through their glass viewing areas; especially as you are entering the cave. A problem that has persisted for years. I can't imagine there is a daily cleaning of windows anywhere in my beloved zoo's exhibits. I hope things changes by the time the newest projects open in the next few months and years; Pachyderm Forest, Reptile and Invertebrate Center, and Rainforest of the Americas. Upkeep is vital to any facility's presentation and reputation.
