I know that Bear Canyon opened to the public almost exactly 20 years ago, but the grottoes appear to be almost a century old! Were they constructed around 1989 or were they simply renovated and refurbished at that time? This area of the zoo, along with the immense Cat Complex, are badly in need of an overhaul.
I agree that they are a major stain (along with the elephant, rhino and sea lion exhibits) on the outstanding great zoo. In the master plan, all four bear grottos are going to be combined to make a new sea lion exhibit, and the cat complex is going to be demolished to create an Equatorial Africa exhibit with red river hogs, okapi, and bongo, to complete the gorilla valley exhibit.
