In your photos of the Henry Doorly Zoo, it looks to be pleasantly uncrowded. Was that because you happened to be there at the right time, or was it generally like this?

Well, there are many factors in the equation.

First, Omaha is not New York, Miami or whatever. There is tourism there of course but it is not a major destination. I think most zoo visitors are locals from Nebraska as well as Iowa and maybe other states close by.

Second, I visited after Labour Day. I understand that many tourism places get awfully quiet after that single day. Some even close! I'm still angry because SeaWorld San Antonio is open only on occasional weekends after Labour Day so I didn't get there to see my Monk Seals.

Third, I was there on a Wednesday and Thursday, meaning that I mostly had the place for myself, especially in the afternoon. Most of the visitors being locals, not tourists, I would imagine that the zoo is mostly crowded on weekends when people are off.
