Oregon Zoo - Asian Elephant Exhibit

August 2008. This is one of two outdoor paddocks, each as bare and empty as the other.

Now you see why I have been raging against the Oregon Zoo's elephant exhibit here on ZooBeat. The enclosure sucks, and the zoo director Tony Vecchio has admitted that its time for a change. The elephants always hang around those big, ugly garage doors in the background.

I agree the exhibit needs to be done over big time, now that there are 3 adult bulls, 3 cows, a calf and perhaps another calf expected.

I think he is trying to say that they have a Borneo Pygmy Elephant and they are trying to breed her with a male Indian Elephant.(Even though I didn't know they have Pygmy Elephants though).

Do we have any reason to suspect either that they have Bornean elephants or that they are interested in this questionable breeding program?

Chandra was born in the wild in Sabah, Borneo, so she is indeed of the Bornean "pygmy" subspecies.

Yes, I have seen pictures of her and Tusko in together. She is one of only two Pygmy elephants in the WAZA. Making her genetics quite valuable... (which was the purpose of her importation)
