Elephant Museum

March 4th, 2010.
How is the elephant museum these days? My main memory of it was that it had a mastodon skeleton, a huge tricycle that had been ridden by circus elephants, and an original movie poster of "Dumbo". Have they added any new exhibits in the last couple decades?

The Elephant Museum opened in 1986 and at that time it must have been splendid, but the past 25 years have dated the facility. On each of my visits I believe that it has essentially been the exact same, and when the zoo had "Dinosaurs" for the summer (which I think has occurred two years in a row) then there was even a dino-themed mini-gift shop inside the museum! A lot of the facts and figures displayed are now a little out of date, and it will be interesting to see if the zoo updates this museum once the new, 6-acre Asian elephant habitat opens to the public. The last information that I read online was that the construction would not start until 2013, so 2015 would be an estimated opening date. Hopefully the museum is kept and given a renovation in the process.
