Don't get me wrong. This exhibit absolutely needs to be replaced, I was just noting that some of the things that make this exhibit less attractive were actual design considerations based on the conditions at the site.
@Ituri: you have provided an interesting history of this exhibit, which as you know is on schedule to be revamped once $5 million is raised. I can recall seeing misters near this exhibit when I visited in 2008, but were they only for the humans or do the orangs receive fresh water directed at them as well?
As far as the misters go, I'm not sure where all they are located. I really thought there were some along the entire rim of the exhibit, but I could be mistaken. Also, the moat surrounding the exhibit was designed to increase the humidity level of the exhibit.
I've heard that work should begin soon on the new orangutan habitat. It's definitely there next major project, and I believe they are close to being able to begin.
