The zoo has not came out publicly yet but this exhibit will be home to a single female red panda. Also interesting news I got from the Curator of the zoo today. The Komodo dragons will get a new exhibit somewhere throughout the zoo. The zoo hopes for both exhibits to be open by june.
Well david, this exhibit used to be home to a special komodo dragon named believe it or not Noname lol he was born at the Smithsonian National zoo and was brought to Pittsburgh in 1997. He died almost a year ago in march 2012 and he was 18 years old. In summer 2012 the zoo surprised the Pittsburgh guest with 2 young komodos from LA zoo. At 2-3 feet these dragons would be hard to keep in this big exhibit. So I got word today that the young komodos will be back on exhibit but in a smaller area. The zoo is working to build a new reptile house for bigger reptiles(Philippine Crocs, Aldabra giant tortoise which the zoo received 4 from Tulsa this past summer and these komodo dragons) in the back of the zoo besides the new animal hospital. The zoo is also planning to have a breeding center for komodo dragon once the youngsters get older.
