Pittsburgh Zoo - American black bear grotto

July 2008. Brutally small, fake, boring and disgusting bear pit.

This photo probably shows about 85% of the entire black bear enclosure, which is obviously far too outdated for a zoo in the year 2010. The Pittsburgh Zoo's children's area is brilliant and 7 acres in size, the African Savanna has some eye-catching moments, the aquarium is less than ten years old and very impressive...BUT the bear pits are horrendous and the primate house is an abomination.;)

The AZA is finally eliminating substandard elephant exhibits. Apparently they are also moving in the same direction with chimps.

Hopefully bears will be on their horizon very soon, if not already. It's amazing how many of these bear grottoes are still in use. Couldn't they at least jackhammer out some of the concrete and put in some grass and trees? Or would even that not improve life for the bears that live here?

im from pittsburgh and what i think they should do is the have 4 bear grottos break each divider in between and make a big mountain exhibit and call it the himalayans and put the snow leopard there. are snow leopard has such a poor exhibit it isnt even funny its so bad and small and outdated. Let me knw what you think bout this idea?

One would have to guess that with the newly planned Top of the World exhibit underway and the fact that only two North American Black Bears currently reside here in these awful grottoes they might be demolished as part of the new project.Snow Leopards are planned for the new project so who knows?

Is it true that of the 4 bear grottoes (all built in 1937) only one is currently occupied? Are American Black Bears the only inhabitants? Is this area to be used for the Top of the World complex?

Yes only one grotto is occupied and it's 2 american black bears. And yes this area will be part of top of the world.

It has been almost 3 years since this comment and I'm intrigued as to the situation with the bear grottoes. The current zoo map (on the website) clearly shows 4 enclosures but is there still only the one grotto actually in use?

none of them are in use anymore. the last black bear past away I believe. the grottos to my knowledge won't be there next year cause of the opening of jungle trails section. there filling all of them with dirt.
