For you old timers I should also add this grass field, which is a multi-purpose entertainment grotto, is the former rhino yard. Rhinos were moved to larger african veldt in 2005.
The rhinos are in now what used to be the nyala yard correct? Do they share it with anything? Are there any antelope left in the zoo? What happened to the old pygmy hippo yard that was just off of the nyala yard?
If you see my other recent photo post, you will see the rhinos live with marabou stork, kori bustard and spekes gazelle. The old pygmy hippos pool was demolished, along with the separating barriers, and is now part of the new rhino yard - yes it is the old nyala yard. (The area where the pool was is essentially a natural mud wallow now). Last year they also added a small hill towards the back surrounded by rocks that the smaller animals can climb on if they need to get away from the rhinos.
Prior to the rhinos moving here, the nyalas were shipped to San Diego Wild Animal Park because other zoos that had tried mixing them with rhinos said it didn't work.
