bairds tapir exhibit (Sept 09)

How long have they kept Baird's tapir? I remember when this exhibit area first opened they kept Brazilian tapirs.

Yes, we originally had two brazilian tapirs, but I think they both died. We got this single bairds from Miami just over 2 years ago.

I really enjoy the South American exhibit area at the Reid Park Zoo. The one thing I always found strange was the lack of primates. I was surprised that there wasn't at least a marmoset or tamarin species included in the exhibit.

Yes, that would certainly enhance the area. I know we cannot have great apes due to Valley Fever (a dust-born illness endemic to the area), but I'm not sure if this applies to monkeys also. Since we already have gibbon, macaque and mandrill, I guess not.
