model of new elephant exhibit

I finally got to see the model in person today, as part of a tour in conjuction with a presentation by Dr Charles Foley, a researcher we help support in Tanzania.

For those of you who have been to Reid Park Zoo, the left side of the model (with telephone pole fence on the bottom half) runs right along 22nd street. The visitor walkway into the new area will be between the current polar bear and rhino exhibits.

I certainly hope so!
Where are the white rhinos at RPZ now? I used to love the very minimal barrier that separated them from visitors in their old exhibit.

They were moved several years ago to the field exhibit that used to house nyala (and years before that had a separated cement pool inside it for pygmy hippos). We lost the male rhino about a year ago but still have one female living with two spekes gazelles, two kori bustards, one marabou stork. Their exhibit (much nicer than the former rhino yard) is for now the south boundary of the zoo, but the new elephant exhibit is being built just south of that. One end of the rhino exhibit is currently blocked off to make way for construction of the new walkway which will also incorporate a new overlook into the rhino yard.
