You can see why these cables are installed in the corner of the exhibit. There are a group of low trees in this corner and if the cables were not there the giraffes would eat all their own shade.

How many giraffes do you guys have now? I heard that one of them died awhile back. There were 3 if I recall correctly when I last visited in early 2010.
Yes, we have three females: the elderly Texas (shown here), the elderly Denver, the middle aged Eleanor. The last one was brought in to breed with the male who passed away (Watoto). We may try to bring in a new male - nothing definite yet that I know of. Since Watoto and Eleanor were observed breeding before his passing, we were waiting to make sure she was not pregnant before bringing in another giraffe. As you well know, they have a loooong gestation period, so we had to wait quite a while. I think right now we are just at the end of the period where we can assume she is not pregnant (I am not 100% sure on this). So I assume we would start looking for a new male, but I have not heard yet that we are actively looking (although I would not necessarily know if we were).
