Rio Grande has a pair of gorilla yards that are extremely similar to "grotto-like" enclosures for gorillas at San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Cincinnati Zoo. The few major pieces of vegetation are all full of hotwire or fencing and the playground equipment mainly consists of wooden beams and poles. The rockwork backdrop is an age-old restraint but the dry moat at Rio Grande is not very wide and visitors can actually get reasonably close to the great apes.
