The proposed $15-20 million polar bear habitat has been cancelled due to the enormous cost of such an endeavour, which is a shame as the zoo used to be known for its bears and even has a large polar bear face as its logo. Roger Williams Park is a decent little zoo with many above average exhibits but its future is constrained by these harsh economic times.
The zoo's website and map no longer has any sign of a polar bear logo:
That is sad, especially because it seems the polar bear has been something of an iconic species for the Roger Williams Park Zoo. They did however say that they have switched that effort into bringing in tigers, a species that is immensely popular with zoo visitors, but they have been lacking. They also mention considering several new species to the zoo such as "African red river hogs, king vultures, takins, venomous snakes, vampire bats, moose, additional monkeys and a walkthrough lorikeet exhibit".
