While it is somewhat difficult to believe (even with the large mock-rock walls in the background) this bald eagle exhibit used to be the home of the zoo's polar bears. It is not often that a zoo has turned a bear grotto into a bird habitat.
I have mixed feelings about this exhibit. Obviusly, I miss the bears, but they cut this exhibit to less than half of the original size. Granted, there was a dry moat before, but still. Weak sauce.
I think if you moved the eagles, fenced in the original space this enclosure had, and worked on the climbing a bit including adding climbing spaces to get on top of the rock, you'd have a pretty excellent Cougar enclosure! If you wanted bears, they could always just add stronger and large climbing and then fence up the original area and then you have an enclosure for American Black Bears. Would need a pool, though, I suppose.
