they've talked about breeding them in the past, but nothing has happened. they don't have the facilities for a bull, besides placing one in a stall. the indoor communal area is small, dark and has concrete floors. the building is shared with a masai giraffe family, and is puny for such large creatures. the ele exhibit yard is decent, but nothing to boast about. the giraffe yard is even worse. it is smaller than an mlb infield. for an area that gets weather of extremes on both ends, both species spend many months inside.
Have they ever considered combining both of the exhibits so the elephants and giraffes share the same area and also they would both get more space then
No, not enough space. Adding the 1/4 acre Giraffe exhibit to the 1 acre Elephant yard is too small of an area. The giraffes could be cornered too easily. The area behind the waterfall bottlenecks and I doubt they'd tear it down to make it more open. Dallas has acreage for Giants and it took them years to get all animals comfortable. There's also areas to separate the different species at Dallas. On the 4 acres or so at Dallas, there are options to make them all confortable. Birmingham Zoo has something similar for their animals. Having a bull herd of African, they get along, but have space. Their giraffes haven't been mixed in at all. The only animals to share the big yard were the Hippo and 1.2 White Rhino. The Hippo enjoyed the various pools while the Rhino enjoyed mud wallows. Having seen Giants at Dallas, one can see the space needed and while it was nice to see, Birmingham was more exciting to me. The Hippo and Rhino were very active and tolerated each other. Dallas and Birmingham can do mixes like that due to the space they offer. RWPZ would need to expand the area and it's already a tight fit.
