Fabric of Africa- African Elephant

July 5, 2012: I feel kind of bad for these magnificent creatures during winter.

What is the barn floor made out of

Concrete in the viewing area. Behind the big hydraulic door are sand stalls for the girls. Giraffe areas are all concrete indoors though.

Do the elephants stay in the sand floor areas overnight and the concrete area is just for when they get baths?

I'm not sure about overnight. In the winter, this where all three cows are. In warmer weather, they can access all areas during operating times at the Zoo. When all three are in this area it is extremely crowded. Last time I was there, they still have free-contact with the cows.

So they are on concrete floors the whole winter?
