Asian Elephant summer yard

This yard extends to left and slopes down towards the back. There is a small amount of the yard to the right not shown. The yard seems to be at least 2 acres with lots of enrichment and the large tree seen in the picture. This will be part of the zoos new elephant exhibit and will extend into the bison yard to the right.

So, do you know some more details of the plan? Are they going to build a new elephant house up with the summer yard too?

It looks like it. At the end of 2007 the zoo was approved to build a six million dollar expansion to the current elephant habitat (the summer yard not the current area for demonstrations). I looked at a current map of RG zoo and next to the elephant summer yard (where the bison used to be and is a good size piece of land) it says "Future Home of Pachyderm Pavilllion". I have sent an email to the zoo to see if they can give me any info. If they are building a barn and expanding the summer yard it could be the one of best elephant exhibits in the Northeast.

I just heard from some one at the zoo. The barn will be built on the old bison yard and will be called Pachyderm Pavillion. There is a plan but is not finalized. The total exhibit will be a minimum of 4 acres (that is just the summer yard) but could be closer to 6 acres, as they have not finalized. Ground breaking will start soon and they will keep and possibly redo the old elephant area for demonstrations only.
