Is it true that there are now actually 4 interconnected Asian elephant exhibits at this zoo? There used to definitely be 3 that were smoothly linked via a series of moats and other immersive-friendly devices, but was there an addition last year? Does anyone know the new total acreage of this series of enclosures?
It's now around two acres in size. The fourth yard was added in an off exhibit area next to the barn. It is only view-able by the train, but it adds an entire ACRE to the exhibit. The new yard is amazing for the Asian elephants, because it actually resembles a forest and has MATURE trees creating a canopy as well as ground vegetation and foliage.

IDA's elephant list actually has no credibility. They consider the St. Louis zoo irresponsible for continuing to breed elephants with eehv1 present. But St. Louis has yet to lose an elephant calf from the virus. So I think it's safe to say they have it under control. I've visited the facility and can honestly say it's one of the best Asian elephant enclosures in the United States.
