This is located in the zone called The Wild. The outdoor exhibit and entry is a former historic bear grotto which now features a new building behind it for chilly polar region bird exhibits.

@geomorph: Many people consider the St. Louis Zoo to have the best penguin exhibit of any North American zoo, but how would you compare this habitat to the Humboldt penguin coastline at the Woodland Park Zoo?

snowleopard, Woodland Park Zoos new Humboldt penguin exhibit is my number 6 individual bird exhibit, it is wonderful with varied terrain and a variety of swimming areas with different depths and underwater viewing. It is much better than Saint Louis Humboldt penguin exhibit outside that is the beginning of Penguin and Puffin Coast. However, the latter gets much better inside, and its Antarctic penguin exhibit is my number number 8 individual bird exhibit. I will note that I still like Sea Worlds Penguin Encounters better due to their more extensive and impressive size and pools, but I do like the Saint Louis open chilly display technique!

I read on Wikipedia that the penguin exhibit was the first walk-through penguin exhibit in the world. Is this true?

Quote:
"The inside of the exhibit is the first walk-through exhibit of penguins in North America. A window-like half wall separates visitors from King, Rockhopper and Gentoo penguins. There are pools on either side of the walkway and two tunnels that go underneath the walkway, allowing the birds to swim from one side of the exhibit to the other."

Its true this exhibit puts you so close to penguins that the zoo has to post staff along the path to assure that visitors don't touch them.

Awesome, thanks I can't wait to visit this summer! I hate to always put my home zoo into things but Cincinnati has a walk-through penguin exhibit that has some of the same features and it opened in 1985.

that quote doesn't say "in the world"

I spoke with the husband (who also worked at St Louis zoo) about his wife who works with the penguins and she and her and a team of keepers actually toured many other US penguin exhibits and combined they all had a huge amount of input into the deign of this enclosure.

Apparently at certain times of the year they walk the penguins around the zoo for enrichment as the actual enclosures are on the small side.

As far as general public experience goes l think this is a world class exhibit.
