A few days ago I just reviewed Saint Louis Zoo on my 20 day/65 zoo tour and this orangutan exhibit is hugely impressive. However, while at the two large viewing windows visitors do spend a great deal of time looking up at the apes and it was the same case when I toured the zoo in 2010. I think that it is clearly one of the best orangutan exhibits in the United States but possibly not truly excellent from a visitor's perspective. The gorillas and chimps are much easier to see and photograph.
Last year I was fortunate to see Orangutans in the wild and the one thing that really struck me was that they live 100-150 feet high up in the trees most of their life. Apparently the adult males as they get older are more frequently lower to the ground
