It is interesting to note the large expenditure that American zoos have recently spent on new exhibits for seals and sea lions. A species such as the California Sea Lion makes for a charismatic, engaging, loud and stinky exhibit but the cost of such ventures has been prohibitive for many zoos. However, just in the past decade there has been a number of USA zoos that have opened new pinniped pools: Utah's Hogle, National Zoo, Memphis, Georgia Aquarium, Riverbanks, Saint Louis, Fresno Chaffee, Louisville, Wildlife World, Minnesota and upcoming new exhibits are set for Como Park and Houston. A Canadian facility, Edmonton's Valley Zoo, opened a pinniped complex a few years ago and it is easily the best exhibit in the establishment.
