Is this seriously their rhino exhibit? What a sad sad life for such a magnificent animal. This "cage" is the exact opposite of Jacksonville's 2.5 acre White rhino paradise.
To me this is totally inhumane and I really think the AZA should reconsider accredidation unless the zoo is planning something new. Doesn't seem like they are planning anything for the misnamed Lucky the elephant anytime soon. Pathetic.
Remember that Houston, Fort Worth, Dallas and El Paso are basically all death traps for elephants, and pachyderms in general have poor enclosures in the State of Texas. However, I'm quite excited about the Dallas Zoo's upcoming 5-acre elephant exhibit as finally there will be something to cheer about for pachyderms in America's largest State. I've just about given up hope on the San Antonio Zoo...
A new elephant exhibit is part of Phase III of Africa LIVE. Phase I opened this year with hippos and crocodiles. Phase II will involve african wild dogs, okapi, and a free flight aviary. It will open in the next two years or so.
I believe these rhino pens were home to the first Southern White Rhinoceros birth in North America.
