Unfortunately yes. I'm not sure about all of the details about the situation, but I have read that they are trying to get her a companion, but that has been about a year ago since that article was written that I saw.
Point Defiance also has two elderly Asian females, just like San Antonio, and Topeka has an aging Asian and African as well. All 3 of those zoos are considering what to do with their elephants (much like Buffalo, Milwaukee County and many others) and I predict that at least 6 major American zoos will permanently stop exhibiting elephants within the next four years. In the current economic and political climate it is impossible for zoos to conjure up anywhere from $20-$50 million for new elephant habitats, especially enclosures that can hold anywhere from 3-8 elephants.
San Antonio is in kind of a weird situate here. They don't have the current facility to house any more elephants (and arguable to house these elephants properly), but what they do have is one of the best climates in the US for housing elephants. If any of these fice zoos (SAZ, PDZ, Buffalo, Milwaukee, and Toledo) were to stick with elephants, it should be San Antonio on this fact alone. Time will ultimately tell though.
