Asian Elephant Exhibit

Aug. 16th, 2010.
Does anyone have an update on the elephants at this zoo? It seems as if every year San Antonio is recognized as one of the worst American zoos for elephants, and yet there seems to be no desire for the zoo to send its two elephants elsewhere. September 2016 is the deadline for all zoos to have a minimum of 3 elephants if they wish to maintain the species and AZA-accreditation will be taken away if that is not achieved at this Texas zoo.

There are some zoos like Santa Barbara that have only 2 elephants that are planning to wait until they pass and then will close down their elephant exhibit. Maybe San Antonio is planning to do this?

I've read about this exhibit and seen video. This one needs to close and these elephants need to be sent to the Elephant Sanctuary or the PAWS Sanctuary.

This tiny, badly outdated exhibit is now home to a single elephant, who is in her '50's and not exactly a candidate for being moved. Some researchers have argued that shifting elderly elephants to new locations can be stressful, but San Antonio should really consider sending her off to Oklahoma City or the National Zoo as both of those establishments have multi-acre complexes capable of holding many more Asian Elephants.
