Thank you for posting this series of behind-the-scenes images of the hippo exhibit in the Ituri Forest section of the San Diego Zoo. Those are some major cuts and bruises on Otis's skin!
San Diego and the Tierpark share many similarities, particularly their histories as "collection zoos." San Diego has moved more toward being an "experience zoo", but they still warehouse a whole lot of birds just to say they have them. And take away the lush greenery and many of the San Diego exhibits are rather Tierpark-like. (Not this hippo exhibit though, which is one of the best in the world)
