The striped hyenas haven't always been there, as they were rotating with the lynx when I was at the zoo in 2006 and I think that they were in a 3rd exhibit even before that time. The one in the photo is right next to the Chinese Goral exhibits, and just down from the Japanese Serow exhibits (which had a sign saying that the enclosures were currently empty). The lynx are across the pathway and slightly down from the hyenas. There are also spotted hyenas by the grizzly bears in bear canyon.
Perhaps the striped hyenas used to be in where currently there are new guinea singing dogs, as the exhibits are next to each other and quite similar in style. The hyena enclosure simply has a lot less vegetation.
When I was at the zoo in 2006 there was a sign on the siberian lynx exhibit that stated that the striped hyenas rotated with the lynx and so visitors were never sure what species would be in the habitat on any given day.
This looks to be one of the renovated goat grottoes. The median dividing wall has been removed, and the moat filled in (and replaced with mesh). You can still see the original "caves" partway up the hillside, and the sheltered bit under the overhang at the top.
