Nearing completion. The elephants are currently occupying the new house, off-show holding areas and what will be the bull enclosure when fully up-and-running (and as such already have more space than in the old exhibit, I'd say). Two large 'cow' paddocks are still being finished-off.

Your photos have got me wondering how Czech zoos are funded because a lot of these new editions at Prague Zoo look like they would cost quite a pretty penny and they're coming in pretty quick succession. If anyone knows (Jana perhaps? or any other Czech members) where the money comes from for these developments I would much appreciate it.

There are different sources of money for investments in Czech zoos. Some are provided by the owner (the city in most cases), some are from EU fonds, some from zoo reserves and depreciation, some small projects are sponsored by donations.

This elephant enclosure was funded by 10% donations and 90% by the city. After the big flood in 2002, the former zoo director and management made an evaluation of the future of the zoo area and species held and decided that the Prague zoo has not the money or space (in secure area) to keep elephants at a good standart. They provided their conclusions and future masterplan (without elephants) to city officials for approval. But the city official found out that Prague as a capital "needs" elephants as a status symbol and promised to pay 100% of the needed investment. The zoo director was not happy, but had no power to change the decision. Unfortunatelly, he was right and the space in the new house and paddocs is limited, with only 4 boxes for cows (and 3 for bulls), which will probably bring capacity problems soon I think.

I would have welcomed rhinos instead ....
