The jaguar exhibit is not something to be disappointed about. It will be 2500 square feet, which is 1000 square feet larger than the brand new jaguar enclosures at Amazon and Beyond in Miami. It will replicate a wetland and have trout for the jaguar to hunt.
Actually, I don´t have any problem with these contructions. They are in my honest opinion extremely ugly, but they may well work very good and be contructive from all possible points of other views than the question of aesthetics. Animal welfare is always my main point when writing here on ZooChat. I understand that the size of the elephant enclosure is now much bigger than it used to be. On the other hand, animals have been transferred here from The Wild Park - I hope the animals transfered now don´t find themselves confined to a much smaller space than they have been used to live in?
I like the concept of other animals having the possibility of coming into the elephant´s space - hopefully this is enriching for all parties.
Judging by the plans earlier showed here on ZooChat for some of the other animals in this combined exhibit - the jaguars for example - I am disappointed, but would be very interested in seeing pictures.
As others have written: a big thanks to forumster washaw for showing us these pictures!
To answer your thought about the elephants, the ones from the Wild Animal Park use to live on 2.5 acre site, and the new exhibit is the same exact size. The main difference between the two enclosures is that this one was built in 2009 while the one at the WAP was built in the 70's, so this one has much more modern features that were not available to the elephants before.

No, believe it or not on all the other blogs I have read people are leaving the exhibit quite pleased. Also, the San Diego Zoo is involved with probably more conservation projects in Africa than any other American zoo.

NO l dont belive you blackRhino, a 8 year olds impression of this exhibit the next day. Often represented by asking them to draw a picture of what they saw. WILL not look anything like Africa.
Lets not get into this BR my previous experiances with you have never been pleasent.

It's not exactly a shade structure, but that is one of its many functions. It is mainly for the elephants to browse from, and I don't think it would look very good if it was made of wood. Plus the elephants would probably gnaw on it and the structure would fall apart.
