Kopje 1986 - Verreauxs Eagle Aviary

This exhibit complex opened in 1986 and still exists. It replicates the rocky islands in the savannas of Africa. The individual exhibits include an aviary for eagles, an aviary for smaller birds, an open air mixed-species reptile yard, and a mixed-species mammal yard with dwarf mongoose and klipspringer and rock hyrax. These pictures were taken in 1986 when the exhibit was new. An adjacent older yard housed meerkats which further extended the area theme.

I was there a couple weeks ago. This aviary now has a bateleur eagle, which is even more striking than the verreaux. (Not that we should value animals based on how "pretty" they are, but it did make for a nice photograph).

I prefer the Verreaux's due to their impressive size (and rarity in US zoos)

And to think that they've diminished themselves from this masterpiece to the wire jungle of Elephant Oddesey!
