Although the part you see here is dirt, there is grass on the front part of the exhibit that slopes down. There are also two dromedary camels in with the three pronghorn and one of the pronghorns and one of the camels were having a little scuff earlier, which drew a small crowd. Fun mix.
I think they are peninsular pronghorn, but not 100% sure.
I asked because when i went the guy giving us the tour said that they were going to get two peninsular pronghorns from the LA Zoo for the exhibit, but he didn't tell us when that would happen.
I was never a big fan of their nighttime zoo. I alway's thought the night viewing was rather limited and disappointing. I hope it has improved over the last 5-10 years since I was a member of the Zoological Society.
Well, night zoo is my favorite time to visit, I think it's fantastic, so maybe it has improved. For the last couple years I have made it a point to visit at least once in summer (this year twice) to go to nighttime zoo.
I kind of didn't like it because a lot of the animals were put away early at around 6 pm. I was mad that I didn't get to see the bonobos, gorillas, and tigers. Other than that it was ok.
The tigers are out at night - there is even soft spotlighting on their exhibit. Just as during the day, though, there is room for them to hide in the large area. When I was there right around closing (9pm), a male was in the back corner but I could see the eyeshine with the pocket flashlight I carry. Earlier in the evening, right around sunset, there were two juvenile females who were very active chasing each other.
When I got to the exhibit I saw the tiger in the back, but then almost immediately it was let into the back room. I waited for almost half an hour waiting for another tiger to come out, but it never did, so I just left. Both the Bonobo and Gorilla exhibits were empty.
