This area is an excellent small exhibit complex themed to the rocky outcrops of the African savanna. The core of the complex opened in 1986, while an adjoining existing older yard was renovated and incorporated later. This aviary was originally an open-air exhibit for lizards.

Interesting about the lizards. What kind of lizards used to be here, and what species of birds are in here now?

I did not note the bird species in here, I remember that the lizards included a species of plated lizard as well as pancake tortoise.

The species in this aviary back in June were: green woodhoopoe, white-headed buffalo weaver, blue-naped mousebird, southern amerthyst starling, and western white-crowned robin-chat.

This type of set-up is very low-maintenance and economic to run. Something to be borne in mind by zoos not wishing to burden themselves unnecessarily with high running costs long-term.
