Africa Rocks - Chinese Goral Exhibit

This section is composed of most of the former Dog and Cat Canyon section, with many older rocky grottos and cages, mostly for carnivorous mammals. This exhibit is composed of two adjacent enclosures.
Behind the exhibits, they're really outdated and the keepers don't like them much. All holding is basically terrarium after terrarium with very little room for the keepers to move around. Also the Tuataras are down there so maybe they will end up on display.

I'm pretty sure these enclosures were around during my first visit to the San Diego Zoo, back in 1964 when I was only 9 years old. There is still that contrast between the extremely modern state-of-the-art here, and the historic monumental zoo exhibits of many decades ago. The Scripps Aviary being a prime example. It is still standing isn't it? I haven't visited this zoo since about 2004, but figure it's about time I got down there again. Though I have visited in-laws that live there in more recent years.

Yes the Scripps Aviary is still there in all its glory!

Although it was totally rebuilt in the 90s--new mesh, new walkways and doors, significantly replanted and new graphics added. At the time it was also re-populated with only African species--don't know if that's still the case. It is beautiful and impressive.

Yeah, in an area called "The Lost Forest" who knows eh?

@Otter Lord

It is interesting seeing the (now) historical predictions in this thread and how they played out. The Reptile Mesa exhibits got rebuilt as Otter Lord predicted, but the tuataras seemingly will never be on exhibit. The accumulation of Australian animals became the new Outback complex. The grottoes in the picture are now long bulldozed and the footprints used for Africa Rocks.
