The New Polar Bear Plunge

April 6, 2010

Shot of the covered viewing area as seen from the lower walkway (just outside the diving duck aviary). Tan buidling on right is a snack bar (because one thing San Diego knows how to do well is rake in tourist dollars - there is also a small polar bear gift shop at the exhibit exit).

All of the animal viewing, including reindeer, is unchanged. They can still be seen as usual, although from the outset the reindeer viewing was never that good - kind of odd how they are somewhat hidden behind the polar bear exhibit.

The two cages to the right and left of the reindeer viewing area, which have held many different small mammals over the years (most recently turkmenistan caracal and arabian wildcat - talk about out of place in an arctic exhibit) - now house racoon (on the right) and great horned owl (on the left). Not quite arctic animals, but at least all north american.
