The New Polar Bear Plunge

April 6, 2010

New display on how global warming is affecting the arctic.
You can see two cages in the background that have held a variety of small animals and have new inhabitants since I was there last summer. On the left is a great horned owl (which you can see in this photo) and on the right is a racoon (which I did not see).

The original inhabitants on the right were arctic fox, the only inhabitants that actually fit the theme. After that it had pallas cats for a long time and then turkmenistan caracals. The left originally had pine marten, and then maybe something else, and most recently arabian wildcat. Great horned owl is closer, but why not put snowy owls in there? And why did they not stick with arctic fox in the other?

The left side actually was originally supposed to hold snowy owls. I'm not sure if it ever did, but the first time I saw it there were yellow-throated martens (not pine martens) in there.

According to one of their blogs, the raccoon is there temporarily until their pair of arctic foxes arrive.
