Javan Banteng exhibit in Horn and Hoof Mesa.
As an ungulate-lover I am saddened, but I do understand the rationale. I know many people who would never bother going out to Horn and Hoof Mesa because all it is is just "a bunch of deer".

Come to think of it, I do remember the Wild Boar now, although I seem to remember them in a side-exhibit, not with the Banteng. But if exhibited together, it would have been an odd mix, with a cattle species from Asia and a suid species from Europe.

I'll forever be grateful that I got to visit SD before Horn and Hoof Mesa was demolished. I know the vairity on exhibit there was probably a lot more before 2003 when I visited, but at least I got to see it, many people never will.

... Like myself unfortunately... :( It pains me to see these old pictures, but I understand why the zoo did it. Not many people can be drawn in from exhibit after exhibit of antelope, deer, and cattle, which are animals generally over looked in collections. How ever, a new elephant exhibit that ties in prehistoric times, which are popular with the children, will keep people pouring in all day. It's sad, but understandable.

The EO elephant yard might not be the best or at all what San Diego is capable of, but it is quite a bit better than most Asian Elephant exhibits out there.

Not saying much--and the point remains this is the self-proclaimed "best zoo in the world," with a hugely flawed--and downright ugly--new signature exhibit that does a disservice to its originally-intended purpose.

Everyone agrees that a larger and better enclosure was needed for the elephants, but the execution of the theme sucks.
