San Diego Zoo 2003 - Javan Banteng exhibit in Horn and Hoof Mesa

Javan Banteng exhibit in Horn and Hoof Mesa.
the execution of the theme sucks.

From what I've seen (and I've not seen the exhibit in person), this wording is exactly right. I quite like the concept (and good on them for doing something a bit different instead of yet another standard geographic display), but they don't seem to have got the full potential out of it.

And I, too, will sorely miss Horn and Hoof Mesa if ever I find myself in San Diego again.

Horn and Hoof Mesa is probably only missed on this site. I miss that section of the zoo too especially because you can barely see Bongo or Addax now. You can barely get a glimpse of them on the JiA ride.

I just visited 26 zoos in the US and have had enough of Bongo and Addax to last me a lifetime. It is the rarer ungulates that people miss actually, in my view.

Well for a San Diegan who can only see these animals at a glimpse on JiA, I do miss these.

BTW, could you name a few of the rare animals that you miss from Horn and Hoof Mesa. I am not as familiar with what is rare because SDZ is what I have known for most of my life and I am having difficulty recalling. I can remember Mhorr Gazelle and Bearded Pigs were some of the rarities though.

I can't say I miss anything special from Horn and Hoof Mesa as I only got to see it once, hence I never got to form any emotional attachment to it. I was more speaking on behalf of fellow Zoochat members who were lucky enough to grow up with this major collection.

I recall visiting it with fondness; those fond memories being a bit ruined by the knowledge I have gained since 2003 of just how much has been taken off exhibit and sold/handed over to private collections. I need to look through my SD photos soon; although they are all here on Zoochat, I did upload them last year.

But for a still splendid ungulate collection in your own country, fly up to Saint Louis, Missouri. I was there a few weeks ago myself actually. Red Rocks is maybe not quite the same as HHM but goes very close ...

Bactrian wapiti, MacNeill's red deer, Saharan dorcas gazelle, gray rhebok, South African bushpig, Zulu suni....

I have been there and both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park have almost every animal in that area. I was quite surprise by how popular the area was. The walk from the entrance probably wasn't as far as Horn and Hoof Mesa but it was still an ungulate area in the corner of the zoo. It's really the giraffes, zebra, and okapi that bring most of the zoo visitors out to specifically red rocks. Unfortunately these animals are all scattered about the zoo in mediocre exhibits at the San Diego Zoo.
