An old but perfectly fine exhibit in my view; the animals' basic needs are taken care of, including that it can hide away from the public eye if it wishes to.
To be honest, just from this photo (it's been over a decade since I was at San Diego), the worst thing about the exhibit is the slightly Colchesterish attempt to disguise the iron bars with even more ugly fake 'rock'.
Just like Baldur said. I fee the same way with exhibit. If there healthy and happy than that is what is best. Since animals come first in a zoo and guest come after. I do feel that San Diego is more of a breeding program and animal Collectors than presenting. That totally fine but at the same time the exhibit counts. The first time I went I was totally killed over by all these really cool animals that I would never have the chance to see in south west Ks. But I didn't get any pictures that I was at all happy with. When I recently went to the Wild Animal Park I felt the same way with the exhibits that are closer to the front. More for breeding and less for presenting.

In San Diego's defense (A rare moment, I know), this "Colchesterization" was done many years ago, probably in the 1960s. Because of the good interior furnishings, these old cat cages are superior to the more recent exhibits at Elephant Odyssey etc.
